The Cabinet Series began at the very same time I started my journey as a painter. In it, I liken cabinets to the frameworks of human society, using them as stages to depict wild animals caught in the struggles of environmental issues and the structures imposed upon them. In this new work, the central motif of the dog (wolf) is painted in forms that shift to match the background cabinet, introducing a fresh approach within the series. I was also inspired by recent news of the “dire wolf” being revived through genetic engineering, and this piece reflects my personal response to that story. As a subtle but significant detail, this is the first work in the series where the outer frame is divided into two colors—blue on the left and red on the right. This suggests the duality between the dog as a domesticated pet and the dog as a wild animal, while also evoking the image of a capsule, alluding to genetic manipulation. Furthermore, the choice of red and blue was intentional, as these are also the main colors of the Osaka Expo. (And hidden within the painting, you may even find a certain Expo character—so please look closely.)
