The work draws upon the historical events of Rwanda in 1994. When a Western journalist attempted to broadcast the harrowing images of mass killings to the international community, a fellow reporter remarked that audiences thousands of miles away would, at most, sigh at their television screens—and then return to their dinners.

In a sunlit and sheltered world, the daily reality of fear and brutality in distant lands remains unfathomable. Indifference and detachment divide parallel worlds. Images transmitted through television are received merely as “events” within everyday life. Only when an “event” transforms into an “experience” does it compel recognition, empathy, and understanding.

The painting unfolds through a constellation of symbolic markers of history: the wilderness signifying the shared essence of life, the morass reflecting the chaos of human conflict, tents representing the instruments of developed civilization, and the raised Red Cross flag serving as a reminder of institutional modernity.
