Azuki FURUYA is a mixed-media artist who takes paper as the core language of her creation. Through cutting, collaging, layering, and sanding, she constructs compositions of remarkable depth that reveal traces of inner emotion and the passage of time. The overlapping and abrasion of multiple paper layers embody not only a technical process but also metaphors of “excavation” and “rebirth.” Furutani’s work often centers on female imagery—from courtesans and shrine maidens to contemporary women—exploring transformations of identity and social roles. While paying homage to tradition, she redefines the boundary between the “gaze” and the “gazed upon.” With both precision and sensitivity, Furutani achieves a poetic balance between fragility and strength.
Born in Sapporo, Japan in 1993, Azuki Furutani received her MFA in Art from Brooklyn College, City University of New York in 2019, and her BFA in Art from Tama Art University in 2014.She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Arts London, United Kingdom.
