Asuka Irie (born 1980 in Tokyo) is an artist who creates artworks using unique techniques that go beyond traditional expressions of printmaking.
In 2012, supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists, she went to Paris, France, where she deepened her knowledge of multi-color printing on a single plate at the historic etching workshop, Atelier Contrepoint.
While primarily focusing on Western etching techniques, she also skillfully incorporates techniques from Japanese painting and Ukiyo-e, creating compositions that stem from rich imagination.
Her works involve etchings printed on washi paper that are then cut out and collaged, with further embellishments using watercolors, ink, foil, and gofun.
Irie's mystical creations, which incorporate elements of the East and West, past and present, captivate many viewers.
