In Japan, daruma are widely known as auspicious figures entrusted with wishes and prayers. These two daruma, however, are conceived as beings “in the midst of updating,” as suggested by the loading icon on their foreheads. Their relationship is uncertain—at once appearing to lean toward one another, yet also seeming to pass each other by. To me, this ambiguity reflects the very process of human connection itself. The prayer to become someone, and the incomplete state before a relationship takes form—these in-between conditions are embodied in the paired figures of the daruma.
