In Manny Garibay’s works, silence is both subject and language. Figures lack mouths not from deformity but as a reflection of our times: a world where speech is weaponized and truth drowned by power. In this enforced quiet, he seeks to reclaim meaning through gesture, gaze, and metaphors. The stillness of characters shows resignation and defiance—meditations on seeking meaning and dignity amid tyranny, despotism, and the noise of postmodern life.
These paintings explore themes of power and powerlessness, belief and disbelief. The recurring symbols—a red book, a toy horse, a caged or wounded bird—serve as allegories for the vulnerability of conscience and the struggle to maintain faith in a world driven by greed and spectacle. While the faces are subdued, their humanity remains visible; the silence itself becomes powerful.
Through these works, he aims to evoke reflection on how we can still see, feel, and hope even when words are insufficient.
