Bed sharing

This painting was first layered with a different plant, over which the one we now see was painted.
I like to look at plants growing in familiar places and recall how those places once were.
Even in the same patch of land, different plants may grow there now.
Sometimes I wish to see again a lovely flower whose name I never knew, one that used to bloom there—but it may never appear again.
I imagine the invisible layers of history lying beneath the soil.
