Depiction:
Dennis Hwang is adept at using the dynamic flow of calligraphic brushstrokes to depict landscapes, women, and horses. His use of color is bold and uninhibited, his lines fluid and free, and his forms childlike in their simplicity, imbuing his works with rhythm and cadence that define his personal style. Huang explains: “I enjoy creating something out of nothing. Color, to me, is a matter of personality. My choices in combinations are unconventional. In my early years I was influenced by Fauvism—when complementary colors are placed next to one another, they create a visual collision, like the resonance of air currents. This reversal in the use of color has become a distinctive feature of my practice.”
