My artistic journey has been a profound exploration of the interplay between lines, lights, and shadows, with a special focus on large-scale wood engraving. It all began during my studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence, where the research of forms, lights, and shadows became an integral part of my artistic practice. Through experimentation with traditional oil painting, fresco temper, drawing, and printmaking, I delved into the diverse qualities of lines and their potential. This journey led me to a harmonious fusion of the simple yet potent means of artistic expression with the ancient wisdom of Chinese philosophy such as I Ching. It marked the inception of a lifelong quest to unravel the intricate dance of lines and the interplay of light and shadow.   In wood engraving, lines are not mere marks; they are the conduits through which light and shadow breathe life into the artwork. The deliberate act of engraving is an act of sculpting not just the wood but also the very essence of illumination and obscurity. Each line becomes a vessel for light, a barrier for shadow, and a bridge between the two.   Lines are the foundation upon which this exploration is built. They are the storytellers, the architects, and the composers of each piece. In my research, lines are not simply strokes of the engraving tool; they are an invitation to a dialogue between artist and audience, where light and shadow add depth and dimension to the narrative.   Light and shadow, in wood engraving, become more than technical aspects; they are conceptual elements that bring emotion, mystery, and atmosphere to the forefront. The way light and shadow interact with the lines in each composition is a deliberate choice, a careful orchestration of visual storytelling.   Through the discipline of wood engraving, I investigate the concept of lines, lights, and shadows as a profound meditation on existence. Each line carved into the wood is a decision, a balance between the presence and absence of light. It is a moment of control over the play of shadows, a dance of control and release.   This exploration is more than an artistic process; it is an ongoing dialogue with the concept of lines and their relationship with light and shadow. Each artwork is an embodiment of time, energy, and thought, a reflection of the intricate interplay of elements that shape our world.   In essence, wood engraving is a lifelong journey of researching lines, lights, and shadows as a means of expressing the complexities of the human experience. It is a continuous exploration of how these elements come together to evoke emotions, create depth, and tell stories. It is a conversation with the essence of existence itself.   As I continue my artistic research into the harmonious marriage of lines, lights, and shadows, I invite you to join me in this exploration. Experience the narratives, the emotions, and the multi-dimensional stories that emerge from each wood engraving. It is a journey into the heart of artistic expression, a reflection of the world as seen through the lens of lines and the interplay of light and shadow.
