Ying-Hsi Liao
Born in 1968
Graduated from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts, Tunghai University, Taiwan
In recent years, Liao Ying-Xi’s works have favored symbolic forms of seeds (the “Mi-Bao” series) and genes as singular shapes. Her latest creations continue this ongoing exploration, shifting the themes of love, hope, and harmony toward more abstract and rational visual expressions.
This pursuit of abstraction and purification not only satisfies a pure artistic ideal but also reflects on pressing global issues such as pollution, population growth, and the transformation of food production under commercial systems. At the root of these changes is genetic modification. Liao responds by integrating the imagery of seeds—reducing them to fundamental forms like circles or rhomboids—thus presenting purer expressions of form, light, and color. This aesthetic transformation suggests a shift from an organic, natural world to a more rational, man-made beauty shaped by genetic engineering.
