Yu Peng, a Hakka from Pingyang Hall, stands as one of Taiwan's most representative contemporary artists. Through his unrestrained and forthright brushwork, coupled with intense emotional resonance, he synthesises poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving into a singular artistic style of profound personal distinction. Hailed in the 1980s as a ‘pivotal figure in contemporary wild-style ink painting,’ his works inherit the spiritual essence of traditional brushwork while radiating potent individual vitality. They reveal profound contemplation of the natural cosmos and the vicissitudes of human existence. Yu Peng's creative output spanned multiple media including ink wash painting, calligraphy, oil painting, and drawing. His compositions radiate intense drama and spirituality, traversing freely between realism and abstraction. In 2011, Yu Peng held his largest lifetime solo exhibition, ‘Remnant, Immigrant, Hermit,’ at Eslite Xinyi in Taipei. He was invited to participate in major exhibitions including the Shanghai Biennale, Shenzhen Ink Biennale, Chengdu Biennale, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's special exhibition ‘Journey Through China.’
