Born in 1985 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Liu Hsing-Yu received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the National Kaohsiung Normal University. His artistic practice focuses on themes of agriculture, ecology, and gender equality. For Liu, photography is both a creative method and a participatory medium, inviting audiences to engage with pressing issues through approaches that are at once thoughtful and playful. As an artist, critic, and curator, as well as the co-founder of the Walking Grass Agriculture/Art Collective, Liu continuously seeks to challenge conventional perspectives and explore the expressive potential of diverse media.
In 2018, Liu was nominated for the Global Gender Impact Awards and received distinctions including an Honorable Mention at the Taipei Arts Awards, the Taipei International Photography Art Award, and the Taipei Art Freedom Award. His work was featured in Cosmopolis #2: Rethinking the Human at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2024, he became the first Taiwanese artist to win the KG+ SELECT Award at KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival, and in 2025 he presented a solo exhibition as part of the festival program.
