Welsh artist James Rielly was born in Wrexham in 1956. He graduated from Belfast College of Art in 1981 and from Gloucester College of Art & Design in 1978. In 1995 he was awarded a MOMART fellowship at Tate Liverpool and in 1997 he was shortlisted for the Jerwood Prize. He has been Professor of Painting at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France since 2006. He currently resides and works in France.
In 1997, James Rielly, associated with the group of artists known as the Young British Artists (YBAs), exhibited with other YBAs in the Charles Saatchi-sponsored Sensation exhibition. Since 1983, Rielly has shown his paintings in numerous solo exhibitions including Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, Nantes, France, Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York, Fond Regional d’Art Contemporain Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, Centro de Arte de Salamanca (CASA), Salamanca, Spain, Centre d’Art Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and Scott White Contemporary Art, La Jolla, CA, among many others.
