Chae Sung Pil is a Korean artist based in Paris who actively exhibits across Korea, Europe, and Asia. His paintings merge Eastern philosophy of nature with Western material experimentation, creating a visual language that embodies the cycle of life through the flow of nature. Using soil, minerals, natural pigments, hanji (Korean paper), and silver powder, he defines himself not as someone who paints but as one who flows with nature—dissolving boundaries between humanity and nature, East and West.
His practice centers on the elements of earth and water: earth as the origin of life and water as the force of change. Through processes of soaking, dripping, and evaporation, he captures the coexistence of control and chance. His deep blue and silver surfaces evoke harmony between emotion and natural rhythm, representing a contemporary evolution of Dansaekhwa that connects material and spirit.
By dripping refined soil water onto silver ground and allowing gravity to shape the result, Chae transforms painting into collaboration with nature itself—an act of stillness, acceptance, and flow.
“My painting is not about control but about letting things flow.
Earth holds life, and water sets it in motion.
I simply wait for the images that emerge within nature’s order.”
