Chris Measor decided the purpose of works of visual art was mostly to convey ideas with imagery. So the skill of the artist is determined in the way their artwork convey those ideas to the viewer. With this in mind, he thought one of the most evocative ways to convey ideas is to build images with narratives. The narrative does hot have to be a full story, but an arrangement of items can produce depth and the appearance that something happens before and after what we see. We can have a figure in an image, and the items around them can inform the viewer of them as a character who has a story.
He uses animals as the main characters in his artworks to explore a range of topics, including history, politics, and film. These animal figures not only drive the narrative but also serve as a way for viewers to connect more easily with the work. He deliberately avoids using human figures, as he believes that aspects such as race, class, and age can impose specific identities on the subject, potentially distorting the message he intends to convey. Through his work, Measor hopes to encourage viewers to take a second look at those who are often overlooked in everyday life and to take the time to listen to their stories.
