This artwork reflects my desire to revive traditional pastries, which are gradually disappearing from daily life. Through this piece, I hope to evoke viewers' fond memories of these treats and bring them back into contemporary life in an artistic way.
The theme of the artwork revolves around a soft, cute, and soothing atmosphere. The scene depicts a series of dreamy visuals: freshly steamed bunny-shaped buns emitting warmth from the steamer, a group of little bunny buns playfully emerging from a longevity peach—symbolizing blessings and long life—and colorful konpeitō candies scattered throughout, creating a whimsical and sweet fairytale-like feast. These elements not only represent joy and sweetness but also carry deep cultural emotions and warm memories.
In terms of technique, this piece combines the delicate precision of traditional gongbi painting with contemporary material innovations. The brushwork is light and intricate, using layered ink washes to capture the soft texture of the buns. A subtle pink gradient is applied to the surface of the bunny buns to create a freshly steamed, fluffy effect. Gold foil and pearlescent accents further enhance the dreamlike quality of the piece, transforming the pastries into a visual feast beyond just a culinary delight.
Through this gongbi ink painting, I aim to recreate the traditional pastries of childhood while presenting a sweet and healing atmosphere through soft pastel tones and luxurious textures. I hope that viewers, while appreciating the artwork, can reminisce about their carefree childhood and reflect on the possibilities of blending traditional culture with contemporary art.
