Yu-Pei Pu was born in Kaohsiung in 1954, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese Culture University with a focus on Western painting in 1977. Throughout her career, she served as the General Director of the Children's Art Research Committee at the Art Education Society and later as the Executive Director of the Children's Art and Culture Foundation.
In terms of her artistic philosophy, she emphasizes that creativity is the lifeblood of art, and continuous innovation is essential for the ongoing vitality of her artistic journey. Starting her creative involvement in fabric painting in 2000, she broke away from traditional quilt patterns, incorporating the artistic conception of Chinese ink painting to showcase the essence of Eastern art. Initially using simple stitching and fabric collage to present the beauty of hand-dyed fabrics, she later introduced the method of stretching quilted fabric over canvas frames, creating smooth and flowing quilted lines. She further integrated painting and sketching effects, combining abstract and concrete elements to elevate the craft to the realm of art. Unsatisfied with the limitations of two-dimensional fabric painting, she began incorporating embroidery, ribbon embroidery, felt wool, three-dimensional quilting, and small accessories, using a diverse range of materials to produce unique and one-of-a-kind pieces. Each artwork is imbued with distinctive ingenuity and style, showcasing great developmental potential and influencing the fields of quilting and embroidery.
The artist aspires for her works to embody a sense of ethnicity, modernity, vitality, and international perspective, particularly highlighting the aesthetic presentation of women in art.
