Recent works depict the view from above, illustrating the landscape of the "Baekdu Daegan," which forms the central spine of the mountains in our country. Each mountain has its own unique beauty, but when they come together, they create a certain regular pattern and repetition of shapes, revealing an underlying principle. Based on the ridge lines of the mountains, countless streams flow and divide from these points, and between these water systems, ecosystems, including human life, are nurtured.
The medium of "(creased) paper" has been a core focus in my exploration of whether it allows me to touch the edges of the vast vitality. Although the physical properties of "(creased) paper" cannot mimic the flexibility, detailed expression, and gradation of ink brushstrokes, its rough texture and three-dimensional quality enable a different kind of realism, invoking the feeling of rocks or trees. The small pieces of paper attached to the canvas, when adhered in various directions, create a specific sense of flow; from different perspectives, they can even produce optical effects.
Recently, I have found that, rather than depicting the object itself, the more important aspect is the action taken to approach the object. In order to paint a hundred rocks, I must cut and attach countless pieces of paper, spray paint, and repeat brushstrokes. What do these repetitive actions mean to me? Of course, behind these actions lies a longer preparation process, including mountaineering experiences and sketching. However, just as countless elements come together to form a rock, I believe it is through the act of attaching thousands of paper pieces and repeating tens of thousands of brushstrokes that I am truly ready to encounter the mountain.
"True landscape painting" does not refer to actual mountain and water scenes but to the principles that form the essence of mountain and water landscapes. Mountains do not easily reveal their true forms. Through continuous "searching in the mountains," if I gain some insight, then the meaning of painting lies not only in creating a result but in experiencing deeper meanings through the act of creation and the process itself.
